I often get asked to compare one brand of tonneau cover to another and the issue of low profile comes up fairly often. Having spoken to literally countless folks about this point, I can tell you with certainty, that 90% or more have no idea that there's a considerable difference between low profile and flush mount tonneau covers. So with this in mind, here's the skinny on the subject:

A flush mount tonneau cover or a "no profile" tonneau cover fits inside the bed of a pickup truck. It is absolutely flush and level with the truck bed rails and from the side of the truck, can hardly be seen.

In stark contrast, a low profile tonneau cover fits on top of the rail of the pickup truck, or at the very least, above the level of the trucks bed rails.
This subtle difference may not seem that much of a big deal to some, but when you break it down, the difference, albeit small can have significant consequences. Here's why:
1. Visibility: If you're backing up your truck, a low profile tonneau will give you limited visibility. A flush mount tonneau will be better and not block your view. So if you're guy that hauls a fifth wheel, a trailer, a boat etc., flush mount will serve you better.
2. Access to stake pockets: A flush mount tonneau will always give you full access to your stake pockets. A low profile tonneau cover will not. This should be a point that resonates loudly with you if you're a person that needs to tie things down in your truck or use your tonneau cover with bed rails or even racks.
3. Style: While a low profile tonneau cover is pretty stylish, a flush mount looks more custom and gives your truck a very cutting edge look. Many low profile tonneau covers are quite square in their design, while a flush mount requires that it be trimmed to follow the inner contours of your truck bed in order to fit properly. the result is a cleaner, more custom look and feel for your pickup truck.

With a starting price of 70k, the Chevy Kodiak is not a pickup truck designed to nip up and down between home and the corner store. It's a real beast of a pickup! As such, BAK Industries chose its BakFlip F1 and BakFlip HD tonneau covers to compliment the Chevy Kodiak.

According to the engineers at BAK Industries, a tonneau cover for the Chevy Kodiak had to have a few important features that would render it perfect. Here's what they are:
1. The Chevy Kodiak is a large, high truck. As such, the tonneau cover couldn't be too heavy. It needed to be light enough to operate with ease, yet strong enough to match the burly nature of the Kodiak. Weighing in at just over $50 lbs and only weighing a fraction of that when opened in increments, the BakFlip tonneau cover for the Kodiak seemed a natural choice. The BakFlip could still handle over 400 lbs of weight on top of it as well. The height hurdle of the Chevy Kodiak tonneau cover was therefore overcome.
2. The Chevy Kodiak tonneau cover needed to allow full access to the stake pockets. Recognizing that this truck is built to haul and work, the stake pockets seemed to be an important feature that shouldn't be eliminated, just because the truck accommodated a hard tonneau. Since the BakFlip fits inside the bed rails, this was a no brainer choice as well.

3. The security aspect was also important. relying on concealed latches and an OEM key to lock the tonneau, seemed to be a natural fit.
4. Style! The Kodiak is a flashy truck. It's a "look at me" vehicle. It' says that you've arrived in more ways than one. And so, the stealth, all aluminum, flush mount aesthetic appeal of the bakFlip seemed to be a natural fit.
5. Full access to the truck bed. The Chevy Kodiak is a large truck. Therefore, the tonneau cover on the bed is large as well. Imagine the nightmare of having to remove a huge hard tonneau cover from the truck, not to mention find a place to store it. A soft cover would be like showing up to the prom in a pair of flip flops, and retractable tonneau covers or poorly designed tri-fold tonneau covers for the Kodiak would simply not do. The BakFlip tonneau cover for the Chevy Kodiak won out on this point as well. Folding up and down in a matter of seconds will give you full access or full covered security. What could be better than that?

The Dodge RamBox is quite a pickup truck, and with it's new design, producing a tonneau cover to compliment the innovative nature of the truck would be a challenge. There were handful of tonneau cover companies that shot out of the cannon almost immediately after the Rambox was released, but being that gung-ho can come with it's fair share of problems. So, despite the truck being truly cool, most initial releases of tonneau covers were very much "grandpa's tonneau cover" reconfigured to fit with the RamBox. In short, they were reminiscent of wolves in sheep's clothing.
So, when a team of engineers from BAK Industries was commissioned to design a new tonneau cover for the Dodge Rambox we were all pretty excited to see what would ultimately emerge. Knowing that products like the BakFlip and the Step-n-Stow had resulted from the minds at BAK, it would be a long six months of anticipation before we finally got to see the end result of their efforts. And boy was it worth the wait!
